Turkish Defense Minister Highlights Technology Role in War Settlement

Doha, October 07 (QNA) - Modern wars and military battles are largely settled based on who owns technology, Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul said as he addressed the opening session of the second day of the 19th International Business Forum (IBF) and High Tech Port Fair. In warfare after the invention of modern military equipment, the Turkish official said, the majority of victors were those who seized technology, drawing the example of World War II, which, he added reflects the significant role of technology in supporting military operations of any country. Gonul reviewed his country's efforts to promote its defense industries, including the development of scientific research, supporting companies that manufacture defense products in order to obtain the necessary technology. He also discussed the challenges that faced Turkey on its way to build a technological base for its defense industry. In this regard, the Turkish minister said his country didn't receive technological support from any country when it wanted to enter the field and produce missiles, noting that missile-producing countries have always kept secrets of the industry to themselves. He added that Turkey took steps to back military industries in order to contribute to the Turkish economy and maintain a good standing within the country's industrial sector. Meanwhile, participants in the event highlighted the importance of the conference and the accompanying fair, stressing that Qatar's successful organization is a result of the strong ties between the two countries. They agreed that the biggest challenge for most of world countries is how to obtain advanced technology that only a handful of countries have, which reflects positively on their economic performance.
