Turkish Firm Targets US$300,000 Sales For Mikat Watches In Malaysia

By Aimy Mohamed Yusoff KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- Turkish company, Turkum International Dis Ticaret A.S, the manufacturer of Mikat digital prayer watches, aims to sell US$300,000 (US$1 = RM4.43) worth of watches in Malaysia this year. Its Chairman Abdulehed Abdulqayyum said the prayer watches, which incorporate special features including prayer calls and prayer times for all cities worldwide and automatic qibla finder, was launched in Turkey in 2011 and entered the Malaysian market in 2015. "We are still new in the Malaysian market and we are targeting to sell a minimum of 10,000 pieces of the unisex prayer watches this year," he told Bernama here, recently. He said the Mikat watches, which come in seven designs -- Classic Sport, Sport Watch, Mikat Luxury Sport, Mikat Classic, Mikat Deluxe, Miat Classic and Luxury Watch, had been marketed to more than 1,300 cities in the world. "We can use the prayer watch easily without Internet access to find the qibla direction. "By choosing your country and city, this clock will continue to make the calculations automatically and the prayer time will auto update daily. The alarm also will beep every time you log the time," he said. With six years of watch-making experience behind him, Abdulehed said it took two years for the company to create the Islamic-friendly watch for Muslims on the move, beginning from its software to the designing process. "This is not easy...One spare part from Japan, the main part from Taiwan, while the compass is from Germany," he said, adding the prayer watch offered seven different languages, namely Bahasa Malaysia, English, Arabic, Turkish, French, Urdu and Russian. He further said that the watch also included features like Hijri and Gregorian calendars, chronometer stop watch, digital "tasbih" (prayer beads), and "zikrullah" (Remembrance of Allah) application to remind the users to read and recite 10 different 'zikir' every hour. "All our watches are water resistant, therefore, making ablutions more practical," he said, adding the public can log on to www.mikatwatches.com to get more information on the watches.
