UAE Eases Import Controls on Fukushima Foods

Tokyo, July 26 (Jiji Press)--The United Arab Emirates has eased its import restrictions on foods from Fukushima Prefecture implemented due to the 2011 nuclear accident there, the Japanese government said Friday. Tokyo was notified of the measure Monday, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It is no longer necessary to submit reports on radiation checks for foods produced in the northeastern Japan prefecture, except for fisheries products and meat from wild game such as boar. Japan's exports to the UAE, mainly soft drinks and sauces, totaled 3.4 billion yen in 2018. Import controls on products from Japan remain in place in 22 economies including the UAE more than eight years after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered the meltdown accident at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s <9501> Fukushima No. 1 power plant.
