UN Should Take Moves To Implement WAVE Act: D-8

Tehran, Dec 24, IRNA -- D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation urged the United Nations to take necessary measures to implement a UN resolution based on President Hassan Rouhani’s World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal. “The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon should first carry out necessary measures to implement the proposal and Iran should also follow up on the matter,” D-8 Secretary-General Ali Mohammad Mousavi said on Monday. “Other bodies of the United Nations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) should carry out necessary activities in this regard,” he added. On December 18, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Rouhani’s WAVE proposal, which calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism. The Iranian president made the proposal in his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25. Under the resolution, the General Assembly would urge member states to take “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.” D-8, also known as Developing-8, was officially founded on June 15, 1997, for the promotion of cooperation on development. The organization consists of Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. The D-8 objectives are to improve the position of member states in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living in the member states./end
