Vietnam, Thailand ink MOUs on investment, labour cooperation

HANOI, March 20 (TNA) - Vietnam and Thailand have signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) on investment, diplomatic and labour cooperation. The MOUs were inked by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and his Thai counterpart General Tanasak Patimapragorn in Hanoi on Friday, when both of them co-chaired the 2nd Vietnamese-Thai Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC). Under an MOU, Thai business operators are welcome to invest more in mega projects in Vietnam, especially those in the energy and basic infrastructure development projects. General Tanasak also asked Vietnam to consider using the Thai capital market to mobilise funds for the Vietnamese public and private sectors, as well as state enterprises. Under another MOU, Vietnam and Thailand agree to cooperate on diplomatic affairs and labour promotion. Both sides also agreed in principle to prepare agreements on launching bus services between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and between Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, aimed to jointly promote their tourism and facilitate cross-border goods transportation. Besides, both sides discussed a possibility of launching boat services running along the coasts of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Prior to the 2nd Vietnamese-Thai JCBC, the Vietnamese and Thai deputy premiers held bilateral talks on the development of relations between the Vietnamese and Thai Foreign Ministries to coordinate and monitor progress of Thailand-Vietnam Strategic Partnership for 2014–2018, as well as on bilateral cooperation at the regional and global platforms in the lead-up to the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) among member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) by the end of 2015. On the occasion, the Vietnamese side thanked the Thai government for allowing and registering migrant workers to legally work in Thailand. (TNA)
