Borneo Jazz Fast Becoming Popular Event In The Region

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), March 12 (Bernama) -- The Borneo Jazz (formerly known as Miri Jazz Festival) 2013 organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), which is supported by the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak and endorsed by Tourism Malaysia, is fast becoming one of the most popular musical festivals among jazz enthusiasts, said STB Chief Executive Officer, Rashid Khan. He said STB expected the eighth edition of the festival would attract huge numbers of spectators as STB had seen tremendous growth in the numbers, totalling 3,000 back in 2005 to 8,000 last year and that the music festival had become one of Miri's annual city celebration. "With the encouraging growth that is happening for this festival, STB are setting a target of making this festival one of the top five jazz events in the world within five years and in the process continously improve to attract more people and support local acts and the economy of Miri as well," he told a press conference on the event, here on Monday. Sarawak in one of the two Malaysian states on the Borneo island. Some of the eight jazz acts that will be performing for the two night shows on May 10 and 11 at Parkcity Everly Hotel, Miri, include gold and platinum selling jazz band from Canada, The Nylons, Hazmat Modine from the United States, and local Sarawak band the West Jazz Band. Meanwhile, STB Director Corporate Communications, Angelina Bateman said STB is continuing its internship and volunteering programme for the event and had invited local school bands to perform at the venue as part of its social corporate responsibility since 2011.
