Indonesian Team Takes Home 62 Medals In World Debate Contest

JAKARTA, July 25 (Antara) - The Indonesian team of elementary school students took home 62 gold medals in the World Scholar's Cup debate contest held in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the end of June. The team was divided into a group of 10-to 12-year-old students and a group of 13-to 15-year-old students. "We continue to contribute to achieving some of the nation's goals which are to revolutionize the character of the people through continuous character education, enable the people to compete in the international arena, and participate actively in the international level activities," Director of Global Sevilla School Robertus Budi Setiono said here on Monday. The contest was participated in by 3,600 students from 44 countries. He explained that by participating in the contest, the students had the opportunity to explore information about the current issues in the world from various points of view. The 2017 World Scholar's Cup was themed An Unlikely World with topics on modern mythologies, history of conspiracy, shoot for the moon, and predicting the future, among others. It featured various forms of competition, including debates, quizzes, and answering questions, both individually and in a group. In an effort to achieve the best achievement, the participants were asked to be able to use electronic devices and technology to get the necessary data and information. "The Indonesian students' participation in this event is aimed not only at taking home medals, but also at increasing their confidence," he said. A participant, Abianne, admitted he felt tense in the beginning of the competition. "I was very frightened at the beginning, but over time the fear disappeared," he said. To take part in the contest, Abianne said he had made preparations since early this year.
