S. Korean short film 'Exemplary Citizen' invited to Cannes Critics' Week

SEOUL, April 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean short film "Exemplary Citizen" has been chosen for Critics' Week, Cannes' sidebar dedicated to first and second films, the film's local distributor said Monday. The directorial debut of Kim Cheol-hwi, the 12-minute film begins with the appearance of the protagonist in a suit at a racecourse toilet, which is a garbage-strewn mess. The movie criticizes social hypocrisy in the director's own cinematic grammar, according to Indiestory. Previous Korean films screened in the Critics' Week section include "Happy End" (2000) by Jung Ji-woo, "Crying Fist" (2005) by Ryoo Seung-wan, "Grain In Ear" (2005) by Zhang Lu and "Modern Family-Circle Line" (2012) by Shin Su-won. The 71st Cannes Film Festival will run from May 8-19. sshim@yna.co.kr (END)
