Shakespeare’s Play On Stage At Iranshahr Hall

Tehran, Aug 25, IRNA - A play titled ‘Shakespeare’s Ladies Gathering’, directed by Bahareh Rahnama, is currently on stage at the Iranshahr Hall of Iranian Artists Forum. The play, using a humorous tone, criticizes and ridicules the current aristocratic lifestyle prevailing among Iranian women. It warns women to be cautious about the cruelty and corruption that might crop up in the society as a result of such lifestyle. The play is a blend and free adaptation of some of Shakespeare’s works including ‘Hamlet’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Othello’, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Antony and Cleopatra’. The characters each represent the main female character of the listed plays including Juliet, Desdemona, Ophelia, Catherine, and Cleopatra. They all have gathered at Juliet’s house. In this play, Rahnama has shown that she knows how to attract and entertain the audience. ‘Shakespeare’s Ladies Gathering’ is about rich women who due to their lifestyle have become mentally disordered and suffer from insanity. Their main hobby is backbiting and talking about their husbands. The play features Mahnaz Afshar, Nassim Adabi, Sahar Dolatshahi, Bahareh Rahnama, Kamand Amir Soleimani and Behnoush Bakhtiari. Rahnama’s work can be a flick in the eyes of the people warning them not to get addicted to this lifestyle. One of the technical shortcomings of the work is the short distance between the stage and audience. Since the stage is very wide, the audience needs more distance to be able to see it better.
