Two Russian filmmakers included into 93rd Oscars shortlist

NEW YORK, February 10. /TASS/. Two Russian filmmakers, Andrei Konchalovsky and Viktor Kossakovsky, were included into the shortlist for the International Feature Film of the 93rd Academy Awards. ‘Dear Comrades!’ ‘Dear Comrades!’ (2020), a film by Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky, has been included into the shortlist for the International Feature Film. A total of 15 films have made it into the shortlist in this category, including entries from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Guatemala, Iran, Cote d’Ivoire, Mexico, Norway, Romania and Tunisia. The black-and-white drama ‘Dear Comrades!’ follows the 1962 crackdown of a peaceful demonstration in Russia’s Novocherkassk in 1962. Earlier, the film won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, as well as some other international awards. 'Gunda' Gunda, a 2020 American-Norwegian documentary film directed by Russian filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky, was included into the shortlist of the 93rd Academy Awards in the Documentary Feature category. The film was shot in black-and-white digital, with no music, voice-over or onscreen text. It follows the daily life of a sow named Gunda and her piglets, as well as chickens and cows. New York Times critic Manohla Dargis described the documentary as "sublimely beautiful and profoundly moving." Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 15, 2021. Winners will be announced on April 25 during a ceremony in Los Angeles, California. Read more
