Aviation Color Code changed to orange in Kamchatka in connection with increased volcanic activity

PETROPAVLOSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 16. /TASS/. The Aviation Color Code of the Chikurachki volcano on Paramushir Island has been changed to orange in connection with increased volcanic activity in the region, the volcanic eruption response team at the Institute of Volcanology told TASS on Tuesday. This is due to the fact that the volcano can at any given moment throw ash to a height of 10 km above sea level, the Response Group told TASS. "The ash cloud rises today above the Chikurachki crater at 3 km above sea level. Ash plume has already spread to 50 km in a northeasterly direction from the giant. The eruption continues. Emissions of up to 10 km above sea level may occur at any moment," a representative of the Response Group said. Orange aviation code means that volcano is exhibiting heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption, which is dangerous to aircraft flying within 10 km above sea level. The expert fron the Group explained that Chikurachki has no seismic stations. Its activity is determined from satellite data and visual observations. Chikurachki is located on Paramushir Island of the Kuril chain. The nearest town - Severo-Kurilsk of the Sakhalin region - is located about 60 km from the giant. Read more
