Beijing Scraps 178,000 Old Vehicles In First Six Months Of 2015

By Niam Seet Wei BEIJING, July 14 (Bernama) -- Beijing has scrapped 178,000 old vehicles in the first half of the year, completing 89 per cent of its annual target, the local environment protection bureau said. By scrapping the vehicles, the city could reduce emission of 52,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, hydrocarbon and particles, the Information Office of Beijing Municipal People's Government said in a statement posted on its official website Monday. "The scrapping will focus on diesel-powered vehicles in the latter half of this year," it said. So far, some 1.62 million old vehicles had been scrapped in the Chinese capital city since 2011. Since January this year, Beijing car owners with emission-heavy models can now earn more money from scrapping their vehicles after the city raised its subsidy for doing so by an average of 2,000 yuan (US$321). Owners who used their vehicles for more than six years and disposed of the vehicles at least one year earlier can receive an average of 8,000 yuan (US$1,305) subsidies and the highest subsidy for cars can reach 8,500 yuan (US$1,387), and 21,500 yuan (US$3,508) for heavy duty diesel vehicles. Beijing is currently imposing the National Emission Standard V for vehicles, similar to the Euro V standard in Europe. Xinhua news agency earlier reported that currently, there are about 5.57 million vehicles in Beijing, which discharge 700,000 tonnes of pollutants yearly. --BERNAMA
