Floating island of grass

URMIA, Dec. 03 (MNA) – The Moving Grass or Chamli Gol is a unique natural tourist attraction in Takab, West Azerbaijan. Chamli Gol, which means ‘an island of grass on a pond’, is a large piece of land covered in straws with their roots stuck together which floats on water. This 100sqm moving island of grass is located on a small but deep pond (8-15m) that shifts directions with the wind or a particular thrust. The growth of vegetation in this area is completely optimal and even in winter the grass will not lose its greenness. The pond is also a home to a variety of fish and wild goose. No accurate information is available on the reasons for this grass moving but some experts attribute this property to the Earth’s rotation and some relate it to natural factors such as wind. Amir Matlubi, representative in charge of Cultural Heritage Administration of West Azerbaijan told Mehr News that this beautiful, unique natrual attraction has been largly neglected and left unknown. “lack of a proper access road, sanitary facilities, and advertising have all caused this attraction site to remain unknown,” said Matlubi, while noting that in spite of these limitations, about 5,000 Iranian visitors as well as 200 foreign tourists visit the Moving Grass each year. “It has yet to be nationally registered, however,” said Matlubi, maintaining that as the reason for this area having yet to be a historical place.
