Heavy Rain Inundates Jakarta, Causes Traffic Gridlock

JAKARTA, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Heavy rain which poured on Jakarta since Thursday until Friday morning paralysed several parts of the Indonesian capital and its surrounding areas with flood waters. A local television news reported at least 10 roads in Jakarta including Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Kalianda Raya and Jalan Raya Cengkerang were under 15 to 40 centimetres of water. According to a Jakarta District Traffic Police Media Unit broadcast, traffic in parts of the city came to a gridlock as several roads were closed. Apart from the capital, several major areas in north Jakarta including Jalan Hybrida to the Kelapa Gading Sports Mall and Boulevard Raya in Kelapa Gading were under one metre of water. In west Jakarta, several spots including the areas in front of Universitas Trisakti and Jalan Daan Mogot from the direction of Grogol also experienced severe traffic congestion due to floods. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Jakarta, the rainy weather is expected to continue until the end of March and the heavy rain is expected to peak next week. -- BERNAMA
