Indonesia Hit By Two Earthquakes Wednesday

JAKARTA, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Indonesia was jolted by two earthquakes in two hours which shocked the Banten district near Jakarta and South Nias in northern Sumatra. The first quake at 1.14 pm local time measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, was detected in the waters of Sesar Ujung Kulon, southwest of Pandeglang, Banten. Local television news broadcast quoted Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) head Andy Eka Sakia as saying the earthquake was detected about 10 kilometres under the sea and no tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake was reported to have been felt in several areas in Jakarta and Bogor but the authorities have not received any reports of property damage. The second quake occurred in the waters of South Nias, north Sumatra at 5.3 on the Richter scale at 3.12 pm. "The quake took place at 15:12:09 WIB. The epicentre is 39 kilometres south east of South Nias at a depth of 10 kilometres," Andy said. BKMG also did not issue any tsunami warning for the second quake. -- BERNAMA
