Iran Taking Lead In Reducing Use Of Substances Depleting Ozone Layer

Tehran, Sept 23, IRNA – Head of Iran Plant Protection Organization said management of pests and reducing use of substances which deplete the ozone layer are among preferences of his organization. In this respect, he pointed to the existing commonalities between the Department of Environment (DoE) and his organization. Speaking at a ceremony held on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Iran’s accession to the Montreal Protocol, Mohammad Baghestani Meibodi underlined the need for cooperation between his organization and DoE. “Plants are parts of the environment and protection of plants is protection of the environment. Therefore, this organization along with the topic of protection of environment undertakes the responsibility of maintaining food security as well.” He pointed to the fact that methyl bromide which is used for purposes such as disinfecting soil depletes the ozone layer and, under the present condition, causes unpleasant consequences such as the climate change. “Our organization in the field of management of pest quarantine and reduction of methyl bromide for disinfecting wood has taken measures beyond its undertakings,” the official further remarked./end
