Super-powerful Typhoon Goni is approaching Russia’s Maritime territory (Far East) at the speed of 28 kph and will reach the area like meteorologists have forecasted earlier, press service of the regional hydrometeorology service said on Wednesday. "At 4a.m. on August 26 (9p.m. August 25) the typhoon was in the southern area of the Sea of Japan," the press service said in its statement. "The pressure in the centre is 980 millibars. It is moving to the north and north-east at the speed of 28kph. By late afternoon it will approach the southern shore near the city of Nakhodka, and at night on August 27 it will reach the Maritime territory." The typhoon is felt in the region already. As it approaches, rains will be developing into storms. The territorial authorities have already announced an emergency regime. The police, rescuers and local authorities inform tourists about the coming disaster. Most people have chosen to stop holidays and return home. Alternative sources of energy were installed in cities and towns and the emergency situations services set tent camps as temporary accommodation facilities. Press service of the Eastern Military District reported all the units are ready for the natural disaster. "At all their locations, they have checked reserve sources of energy and life supplies, all planned training, flights and sailing will be made depending on actual and forecasted conditions," head of the Military District’s press service, Alexei Gordeyev said. The local branch of the emergencies ministry reports they have checked over 800 reserve sources of energy sufficient to cover 100% of housing and social facilities. The ministry says almost 10,000 people and over 2,300 pieces of equipment are ready to meet consequences from the typhoon. Weather specialists say the typhoon’s centre will be between Vladivostok and Nakhodka. Further on, it will be "turning" to north-west towards north-east of China’s Heilongjiang. A storm on the see is likely to be accompanied by the 4.5-meter tall waves. Typhoon Goni can be compared with most powerful typhoons in the Maritime territory in the past. For example, Typhoon Robin on July 13, 1990, brought to Vladivostok 244 mm of precipitation - a record in the history’s meteorology data. Another mighty typhoon was in 1989 - Typhoon Judy - that tropical storm flooded 120,000 hectares, including 109 settlements and 2,000 houses. Read more
