Putin calls to look for new breakthrough approaches in addressing climate change problem

UNITED NATIONS, September 28. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged to look for new breakthrough approaches to the problem of climate change, a challenge of planetary scope. "We might defuse the problem for a while by setting quotas on harmful emissions or by taking other measures that are nothing but tactical. But we will not solve it that way," Putin said on Monday addressing the 70th jubilee session of the United Nations General Assembly. "We need a completely different approach. We have to focus on introducing fundamentally new technologies inspired by nature which would not damage the environment but would be in harmony with it," he stressed. He said such measures would help "restore the balance between the biosphere and technosphere upset by human activities." "It is indeed a challenge of planetary scope," Putin said. "But I am confident that humankind has an intellectual potential to address it." The Russian leaders called on countries having solid research basis to pool efforts in addressing this problem. "We propose convening a special forum under the U.N. auspices for a comprehensive consideration of the issues related to the depletion of natural resources, destruction of habitat and climate change. Russian would be ready to co-sponsor such a forum," he said. Read more
