Russia by 2020 to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 75% of 1990 level

MOSCOW, May 15 (Itar-Tass) - Russia by 2020 plans to cut the emission of greenhouse gases to 75% of the 1990 level, RF Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said in Moscow on Thursday at the opening of the 14th ministerial meeting of the International Energy Forum (IEF). The RF deputy prime minister noted that in general about two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions are linked with energy production and consumption, in connection with which this problem concerns the whole world energy policy. “Russia for its part plans to cut the volume of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 to 75% of the 1990 emission volume,” Dvorkovich said, adding that “we will specify the further guidelines in a new energy strategy to 2035.” The deputy prime minister said “energy poverty” is another modern challenge in this sphere. According to him, Russia participates in the settlement of this problem, “over the past 10 years the RF granted more than three billion U.S. dollars within the framework of the provision of official assistance to development.” “In the struggle for energy security there will be no winners and losers, ultimately - all will either win or lose,” Dvorkovich concluded.
