S. Korea to help cut 860 mln tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030

SEOUL, April 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Monday it will help developing countries cut 860 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement, to tackle global climate change. The move is part of South Korea's broader three-year plan to nurture the country's climate technology industry, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT. The scheme also includes its push to open an Asia-Pacific office for the Climate Technology Center & Network (CTCN) in South Korea and carry out US$10 billion won worth of global projects related to the climate issue by 2030, the ministry said. The CTCN is a U.N. unit that provides technical assistance to developing countries for low-carbon and climate-resilient development. "In order to become a leading player in global climate technology cooperation, we will concentrate our domestic capabilities and strengthen external communication channels for overseas expansion," a ministry official said. The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, is aimed at slowing the increase in the global average temperature to reduce risks and the impact of climate change. It is to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2020. (END)
