Two Strong Earthquakes Hit Solomon Island

KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- Two strong earthquakes measuring 6.8 and 6.7 on the Richter Scale struck Solomon Islands Saturday morning. The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement issued here Saturday, the first epicenter which measured 6.8 on the Richter Scale occurred at 5.45 am, located 194 km away southeast of Kirakira, Solomon Island, 5,276 km southeast of Semporna, Sabah. The second quake occurred at 7.59 am, measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale, and located 162 km away southeast of Kirakira, Solomon Island, 5,241 km southeast of Semporna, Sabah. No tsunami threat was reported, it added. Previously, Solomon Island was struck by its first strong quake on May 7 measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale. -- BERNAMA
