Typhoon Goni to strike at Russia’s Primorsky territory overnight to August 27

VLADIVOSTOK, August 25. /TASS/. Super-powerful Typhoon Goni that battered Japan’s Okinawa prefecture on Monday will strike at Russia’s Far-Eastern Maritime territory on the night from Wednesday to Thursday and will most probably impact all the districts of the territory including the city of Vladivostok, the chief of the Primorsky territory’s center for hydrometeorology, Boris Kubai told reporters at a special news conference devoted to the typhoon. Goni will move to the central area of the Sea of Japan at the very end of the day on August 26 and will approach the shore at nighttime. The heaviest rainfall is expected in the southern parts of the Primorsky territory. The territorial authorities have already declared an emergency situation in the Partizansky district where the situation with flooding has deteriorated and floodwater has inundated the basement flows on about 160 private households. Vladivostok will likely feel the typhoon’s full rage and especially if the forecasts for a particular dense rainfall come true. The hydrometeorology service says one may expect the fallout of as much rainwater the city usually sees over a whole month. Primorsky territory emergency officials instructed the executives of agricultural production associations to remove cattle from the places that could be flooded. "People should be evacuated from the fields along river banks where harvesting is in full swing at present," Alexander Los, the Deputy Governor of the Primorsky territory said. Simultaneously, the police were notifying holidaymakers on sea beaches of the coming danger. People were recommended to interrupt vacations and to leave for home. Alternative sources of energy were being installed in cities and towns and the emergency situations services were installing tent camps for provisional accommodation of people. Forecasts say in the meantime, Goni may reach the Primorsky territory’s shores by the evening of August 26 and bring the amounts of precipitation that will usually fall out over a period of 45 days. Heavy rainfall is likely to from inundations in the local rivers where the water will rise by one to three meters. A storm on the see is likely to be accompanied by the 1-meter to 3-meter tall waves.
