Volcano in Russia’s Far East spews ash to height of 6 km

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 25. /TASS/. The Shiveluch volcano on Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has released a column of ash to the height of almost 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) above the sea level, a local branch of geophysical service of Russia’s Academy of Sciences said on Thursday. "According to seismic data, on Thursday morning a column of ash over the Shiveluch volcano rose to 6,400 meters above the sea level. However, there is no visual confirmation to this as the giant is caught in the clouded sky," an expert of the geophysical service said. The ash is moving in the northern direction. The local emergencies service said no ash falls have been registered in the settlements. The Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The nearest settlement - the Klyuchi village - is located 47 kilometers (30 miles) away from the volcano. Read more
