Malaysia, India Need Greater Cooperation In Education - Indian High Commissioner

By Siti Baaqiah Mamat KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and India need greater cooperation in the education sector, says Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, T. S. Tirumurti. He said Malaysia emerged as a hub of knowledge and had always been a destination of choice for Indian and other international students to continue their studies. "Further improvement in bilateral relations in the education sector will give rise to more opportunities for both countries to sustain the unity and stability of the nation. "The students will not only bring back knowledge but will also gain an experience in ensuring prosperity for their own respective nations," he told Bernama after the launch of the Islamic Calligraphy Photo Exhibition at the Museum of Asian Art, University Malaya (UM) here Sunday. Tirumurti said one aspect which Malaysia and India were currently pursuing was the plan to exchange students and recruit teachers from India to teach the English language in Malaysia. In expanding bilateral relations, he said India also offered two scholarships under the Education Exchange Programme (EEP) to meritorious students from Malaysia for the academic year 2015-2016. The scholarship covers all courses, including Engineering, Architecture and Law except for medical-related courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Physiotherapy. "I know medicine is popular with Malaysian students, however this time, students wishing to pursue Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D in other various courses such as Law and Engineering at any Indian university can apply for the scholarship," said Tirumurti He said more than 1,500 Malaysian students went to India every year and about 10,000 Indian students studied in Malaysia. Meanwhile, UM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin said the university would continue to collaborate with the Indian high commissioner in strengthening Malaysia's ties in the education sector. He said currently, UM had gathered experts from India to teach Indian Research Humanities under the Department Of Indian Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. "I hope under this (Department Of Indian Studies) roof, there will be more Indian experts coming forward to bring better knowledge to Malaysian students," he added. -- BERNAMA
