Malaysian Company Builds 5 Temporary Shelters For Nepal Quake Victims

By Syed Iylia Hariz Al-Qadri Syed Izman KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Moved by the sufferings of Nepalese after the Himalayan nation was battered by the worst earthquake in 80 years, a local company has collected funds from its staff to build five temporary shelters. Veritas Design Group, a multi-disciplinary consulting firm integrated for architecture, landscape and interior design spent the US$2,349 (RM10,000) in funds to build the shelters. With assistance from the Arun Chaudhary Foundation based in Nepal, the shelters were built last month for the homeless vicitms for use as temporary homes. The three-metre in width, 4.6 metre in height shelters made from aluminium coat-based material costing US$500 per unit could accomodate a family of five, Veritas Design Group president and chief executive officer David Mizan Hashim told Bernama recently. He said the project to build the shelters came about after he had travelled to Nepal in June to get a first-hand experience of the disaster and realised that a huge number of Nepalese were left homeless, and living in makeshift camps or among the ruins of their houses. It was an eye-opener for him. It was imperative that the company give a helping hand and build shelters for the homeless. "Society has given a lot for us...why don't we give something back in their hour of need?," he asked. On April 25, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit Nepal, killing more than 9,000 people. Since then, the country has experienced 387 aftershocks of over magnitude 4.0. The Kathmandu Valley which is located in Nepal - famed for having seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites - has also been devastated by the earthquake. --BERNAMA
