Malaysia's US Ambassador In 411km Cyclethon To Singapore For Love Of Environment

By Maizaitul Sabirah Aziz KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- In the name of environmental awareness, the United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia will cycle 411km from Putrajaya to Singapore to mark World Environment Day which falls on June 5. Joseph Y. Yun will lead a group of 15 embassy staff and their family members in a six-day cyclethon beginning May 31, at the federal administrative centre. The trip ends in the republic on June 5. According to a statement from the US Embassy here Friday, Yun and the group will use their own bicycles to make six stopovers during the journey. They will be accompanied by four traffic policemen. In Melaka, 20 cyclists from the Melaka Cycling Club will join the group while the Pontian-Johor Baharu route will see 70 cyclists joining them. The aim of the 90 cyclists in joining Yun's group is to show support for the environment. The bicycle has been chosen as their mode of transport to promote environmental awareness and serve as a unique experience for the US Embassy staff. In Melaka, the statement noted, Yun would join a river boat cruise and participate in a youth event to promote green technology. In Pontian district (of Malaysia's southern state Johor), the ambassador will plant mangrove trees to promote coastal management practices while in Johor Baharu city, he will attend a talk on mammal conservation, a signing ceremony for a Sunway-Eco Knights agreement on sustainable development and an 'Art in Park' programme in UTM Skudai to promote recycling. In Singapore, Yun will participate in an event at the Nanyang Technological University on rain forest research. The group will return to Kuala Lumpur either by car and flight. World Environment Day is the United Nations principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. It is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries.
