MONGOLISTS DISCUSS HERITAGE OF MONGOLIAN SCRIPTS

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Aimed at introducing to public a source of various scripts that Mongolian people used and ancient documents being preserved in Mongolia and foreign countries, an International Scientific Conference entitled ‘Heritage of Mongolian scripts’ took place on August 17-18 in Ulaanbaatar city. Over 30 Mongolists, scholars and researchers from nine countries, such as Mongolia, Russia, China, Italy and Hungary participated in the conference, co-organized by the National University of Mongolia and the National Library of Mongolia under support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sports. Mr. Tsengel, a specialist at the Institute of History of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that I introduced valuable findings of scripts and writing set dated back to the Great Yuan, uncovered from Qaidam, Qinghai (Kokonur) province of China. It is the first time to present these valuable findings that have a direct connection with Mongolian empire. The finds also include an inscription on arrow and 500 pieces of paper money. Alexander Vovin, Professor at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations of France, said “I am focusing on Khuis Tolgoi Inscription and studying the inscription written in Brahma language based on Mongolian script.” Hiroshi Futaki, Professor at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, said "I studied rare historic and cultural documents of Mongolia being preserved in the library of our university. In particular, there is a newspaper written in Mongolian script in the 20th century. The first teacher from Mongolia arrived in Japan in 1908 to teach Mongolian script. Further, the Department of Mongolian Language and Studies was founded in 1911 in the university. Since that time, some 40 Mongolian teachers worked in our university." The conference created a possibility for Mongolists and scholars to exchange information regarding their studies and initiate a collaboration. B.Batchimeg
