Social Media Raises More Ethical Issue - Experts

By Erda Khursyiah Basir KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- Social media as an online platform for public sphere raises more ethical issues but lacks good content. Singapore's Ideas and Andrew founder, Andrew Chow said this was the result of the people's inability to handle the power of social media. "For example, on Facebook or Twitter you can post anything and you can be a teacher, judge or anybody but the question is, can you handle the responsibility? "Are you able to be cool headed, not emotional and angry during updating your status on social media when you are in that kind of feeling?," he asked when speaking to Bernama during the World Bloggers and Social Media Summit here Wednesday. The five-day summit which began Tuesday, is held in conjunction with the Social Media Week 2015. He said social media in reality, was a reflection of human life. Elaborating, Chow, who is also a leading social media and public relations strategist, said other issues were when a lot of people did not know how to create a good video content, as well as get attention from the people. "There is a difference when you upload your video on Facebook or Youtube because nowadays, video on Facebook has more engagement than it is on Youtube. It is becoming more interesting on Facebook as you will get more comments and more shares. "If your content on Facebook is very attractive and people share, do you know that one share is equal to 500 likes? Furthermore, on Facebook you can see clearly how many likes and shares you manage to get," he said. Sharing his opinion on the issue, Malaysia Social Media Chambers founder and president Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood said social media problem was global. "Authenticity of the content is always a problem. The bad or false news spread much faster than the good news," he added. He said it was imperative for users to ensure the information they put on the social media was accurate, accountability was taken care of, and sensitivity understood. --BERNAMA
