SPAD Should Hold Special Meeting To Discuss Increase In Road Accidents

By R. Ratcharathan KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has to hold a special meeting as soon as possible to discuss the increase in the rate of accidents during the festive season, said Lee Lam Thye, who is a National Road safety Council member. He said the meeting should also review efforts taken by all quarters so far to reduce accidents and fatalities in road crashes. "Besides SPAD, the taxi drivers association and bus drivers association, as well as other interested parties, should also work together to identify measures that could effectively reduce road accidents," he told Bernama when contacted here Sunday. Lee was commenting statistics released by Bukit Aman Traffic chief Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff that 12,383 cases or road accidents and 203 fatalities were recorded in Ops Selamat 7/2015 carried out in conjunction with Aidilfitri (Eid celebration) since July 10 until Saturday. The high number of road crashes also drew the attention of Prime Minister Najib Razak, who advised Malaysians returning or about to return from their Aidilfitri holidays to be alert and cautious when on the road. The prime minister said this in the latest post on his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Lee, who is also National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), said motorists should always be safe and exercise caution when on the road. "Every road user must embrace road safety as a culture to prevent fatal accidents," he added. -- BERNAMA
