Tremors Of Magnitude Four Shake Kathmandu Thursday

By Yuba Nath Lamsal KATHMANDU, May 28 (Bernama) -- Four tremors shook Kathmandu and its surrounding districts early Thursday, sending shockwaves to the already panic-ridden people. People ran to the streets as the quakes of magnitude four, with epicentres in Kathmandu, hit just after dawn. The National Seismology Centre (NSC) said these were the aftershocks of the massive April 25 earthquake of magnitude 7.9. Five aftershocks were felt on Wednesday as well, it said. Aftershocks have continued to jolt Nepal daily after the massive earthquake that hit Nepal, killing at least 8,600 people and injuring over 21,000. More than 30,000 aftershocks have been recorded so far after April 25 with 281 of them of magnitude four, according to the NSC. Life has not returned to normal even more than a month after the devastating earthquake occurred, due mainly to continued aftershocks. Some people still fear to return to their houses and are living in tents in open spaces due to the fear of another powerful earthquake. More than a half million houses have been damaged with almost 100,000 completely destroyed, including over 5,000 school buildings. The Nepal government has promised to complete reconstruction in three years, for which it has asked international organisations to provide financial support. According to the United Nations Humanitarian Office, about eight million people have been affected by the earthquake, with 1.4 million requiring food aid. --BERNAMA
