Woman – Family - Country: problems and prospects

Astana, 06 March 2009, Khabar – The city of Astana has staged an international conference entitled “Woman – Family - Country: problems and prospects”. The forum involved delegates of the Kazakhstan annual forum of women who discussed the most acute topics which have always been topical for women in all times. In particular, they touched upon an increase in the prestige of family and marriage, children’s upbringing and the role of women in the construction and fortification of the state. Some foreign guests also took part in the discussion as female representatives from Spain, Russia, France and other states were invited to the forum. Five discussion streams were active at the event and their participants were talking about different but still acute issues such as women in small-sized businesses, politics and women’s security which featured the majority of questions posed at the meeting. The forum participants were basically interested in when the government was going to adopt a law preventing domestic violence. In response, they found out that the Republic’s MPs are now working on it.

Svetlana Kovlyagina, chairman, Pavlodar regional penalty reformation and human rights monitoring committee:
- Such a law will allow us to prosecute those who cause dangerous conditions for women in the family. Due to the absence of such a law, it is difficult to prosecute such people and the victims are still unprotected.

A discussion stream with the motto “Family is the foundation of stability and unity in Kazakhstan” also involved some topical issues. Its participants touched upon the increase in children’s upbringing in families and the growth in birthrates. The forum participants also noted that over the past few years, the birth rates in the Republic have gone up significantly but the general demographic situation still requires more attention to be paid to by the government. The statistics says that in 2000, 3.5 million families were registered in Kazakhstan, while today the figure is around 4 million.

Yelena Tarasenko, MP of RK:
- We need to promote the prestige of the family at a high level. We need to fortify fatherhood in our country as well. We are planning to announce Family day in Kazakhstan. We are really concerned about men’s life expectancy in the Republic as the current difference is 9 or 11 years. It is really worrying.

The way children should be brought up was the topic of discussion on another stream entitled “Role model family: traditions, language and modernity”. Today, people should focus more on national traditions and teach their children history. As a result of the conference, the forum participants put forward some recommendations for state bodies.
