“Celebration of Mother Sea” event takes place

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Mongol Ecology Center (MEC) has organized the “Celebration of Mother Sea” event on the lakeshore of Lake Khovsgol. Local authorities, businesses and community members participated in the event to honor and celebrate the beauty of the Lake. The significance of this event was enhanced by the attendance of European Union Ambassador to China and Mongolia Dr. Markus Ederer. Honorary guests singer S. Naran and singer O.Uyanga performed their song about “Mother Sea” to the audience and as it is echo transcended throughout the park, the honorary guests and community members danced in the rain. During his official visit to the Lake Khovsgol National Park, Ambassador Markus Ederer met with L.Davaabayar, director of the Lake Khovsgol National Park, representatives of local communities and members of Khovsgol Tourism Association. In the course of the meetings, they discussed opportunities and challenges in the park and collaboration of all participating parties. During his visit to the park, the Ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Matthias Reusing, First Secretary for Operations/Cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union. The MEC has been working with an international team of experts since 2011 to strengthen the management of Lake Khovsgol National Park by using international best practices to preserve natural, historic and cultural resources. From 2011-2012, MEC completed the Foundation Document of General Management Plan, Transportation, Visitor Services, Interpretation and Education Action Plans. Lake Khovsgol contains 70% of all Mongolia's and 1% of the world's fresh water. The Lake Khovsgol National Park wholly encompasses the lake. In collaboration with the Global Nature Fund (Germany), MEC has been awarded a grant from the European Union over a period of three years. These funds will provide experts to conduct a wide variety of training for park staff, ger camp managers, tour operators, and local citizens; and produce a variety of brochures and exhibits to inform and inspire visitors about the Park values. Finally, these funds will serve as leverage to advance the goal of creating the Lake Khovsgol Conservancy, which would be a place where current and future research findings can be assembled and translated into field programs essential to the long-term preservation of park resources.
