10,099 Vehicles Seized During Songkran

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) reports that it's 'Drunk Driving - Seize Cars' campaign for the 5 days of Songkran holidays have resulted in the seizure of 10,099 vehicles. Deputy Spokeswoman for the NCPO Col. Sirichan Nga-Thong reports that vehicular traffic is at present very high on national highways as people have begun returning to major cities after the Songkran break. The deputy spokeswoman revealed that the NCPO has ordered officials to ensure the greatest convenience and provide the highest security for motorist by mobilising rescue and traffic control teams on standby on all major highways and secondary roads. Special lanes have also been ordered to be opened to alleviate congestion. Furthermore, all officials have been ordered to strictly enforce traffic laws in particular those related to drunk driving offences. As a result of the 'Drunk Driving - Seize Cars' campaign 10,099 vehicles have been seized during the last 5 days between April 11 - 15. Of these 7,372 were motorcycles and 2,727 were automobiles. In all, 113,450 people have been charged with motorcycle related offences while a further 69,898 have been charged with traffic offences related to privately owned and public transportation. (TNA)
