1,584 suspects arrested for gambling during 2014 World Cup

BANGKOK, June 22 (TNA) - Thai police have so far arrested 1,584 suspects allegedly involving in betting on 2014 World Cup matches, said a senior police officer on Sunday. Police Major General Anand Srihiran, commander of the Royal Thai Police’s Office of Police Strategy responsible for suppressing soccer gambling, said the suspects were involved in 1,558 World Cup illegal betting cases. Police have also seized 380,949 baht in cash and bank books with deposited money worth altogether 498,709 baht from the suspects, he said, nothing that they were believed to have been used on illegal betting. Most of the alleged gamblers and bookmakers were arrested in Bangkok followed by those in eastern and northeastern provinces, said Police Major General Anand. Police have also shut down 623 soccer gambling websites and are preparing to close 277 others, he added. The 2014 World Cup, currently being held in Brazil, entered in 10th day on Sunday. (TNA)
