181 killed, 1,777 injured in first three days of Songkran

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- A total of 181 persons killed and 1,777 were injured in road accidents during the first three days of seven days of the Songkran holiday from April 11-17, said Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul on Thursday. Ms Kobkarn told a press conference that the Road Safety Center reported that the number of casualties were recorded throughout Thailand between April 11 – 13 in which 1,661 road accidents were reported. Road accidents were reported most in the northern province of Chiang Mai, one of the most favourites for Songkran festival-govers, in which 74 accidents were recorded, she said. The northeastern province of Buri Ram recorded the most deaths with 10 and Chiang Mai had most injuries with 80 persons during the period, said Ms Kobkarn. Most accidents were attributed to drinking alcohol and driving and speeding. Ms Kobkarn also projected that 2.1 million Thais and 495,000 foreigners would celebrate Songkran festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year, which officially ends Friday. About 15 billion baht is expected to circulate in the market. (TNA)
