19 provinces affected by tropical storms

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reports that 19 provinces in the country were hit by severe storms between April 13 - 16 and relief efforts have been coordinated to affected areas. Chaiyaphon Thitisak, the director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that 892 homes in 19 provinces were hit by severe tropical storms between April 13 - 16. Two people lost their lives. Mr. Chaiyaphon however was now concerned over latest reports from the Meteorological Department of another batch of tropical storms over the north, northeast, south and central plains including Bangkok between April 16 - 18. Heavy rains, severe winds, thunderstorms and hailstorms have been forecast. Its local offices throughout the country have been notified to prepare and post officials on 24 hour standby. Also rapid response teams equipped with specialised medical and rescue equipment have been formed to provide immediate assistance to victims. One priority is for an early warning system that must closely monitor weather conditions so that the public can be provided with the earliest possible warning. Mr. Chaiyaphon is asking the general public to keep up with weather reports and public announcements and take all necessary precautions to safeguard their property and family members. (TNA)
