221 Illegal Immigrants Including 197 Myanmar Nationals Detained In Padang Besar This Year - Police

PADANG BESAR (Perlis, Malaysia), May 14 (Bernama) -- Myanmar nationals comprised the highest number of foreign nationals detained for entering the country illegally through the Malaysia-Thailand border, this year. Perlis police chief Zull Aznam Haron said 221 illegal immigrants were detained up till Tuesday, and 197 of them were from Myanmar. "The others detained are believed to be from Bangladesh, Thailand, Laos, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan and France," he told reporters after visiting the Padang Besar Police Headquarters, here Wednesday. He said police have yet to make arrests over illegal entry into the country through Perlis waters. "We always take proactive measures and follow the issues," he said. Meanwhile, crime cases in Padang Besar had dropped to 35 cases from Jan 1 to April 30, compared to 65 cases for the same period last year. -- BERNAMA
