BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, October 10 (TNA) - The 23rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit has concluded, with member countries agreeing on strengthening economic cooperation and on making joint efforts to solve conflicts, especially on current disputes in the South China Sea. Thai Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told TNA on Thursday, after the conclusion of the two-day ASEAN Summit 2013 and meetings with key dialogue partners, that ASEAN member countries agreed to help promote economic cooperation with one another and with other regional countries in the future. Regarding regional security, Yingluck said ASEAN wants to see talks at every platform to be “constructive” and to focus on the regional level, not on self-serving interest, so that regional connectivity could sustain growth, while differences would be eradicated. Yingluck acknowledged that Thailand, as the coordinator between the 10-member ASEAN bloc and China, also asked for close cooperation at the meeting, aimed at ridding disputes in the South China Sea and several countries unanimously agreed, as they wanted to see peace for maritime in the area, which should be considered a positive starter for Thailand. According to the Thai prime minister, several participating countries also agreed with her proposals for food security and the establishment of a regional centre to assist people affected by natural disasters. The Thai premier noted that the participating countries urged that the cooperation be widened to other forms of food, along with technological cooperation and the promotion of green energy. (TNA)
