BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) -- A total of 338 persons died and 2,891 injured during the past five days of the so-called ‘Seven Dangerous Days’ in road accidents throughout Thailand during the Songkran festival, said Chaweerut Kasetsunthorn, assistant to the Culture Minister. She said a total of 2,724 road accidents were reported nationwide during the period. Most accidents were recorded in the northern capital of Chiang Mai with 136. Bangkok recorded with most killed with 15 persons while Chiang Mai had most injured persons with 144, said Ms Chaweerut quoting statistic figures released by the National Road Safety Centre. Most road accidents were attributed to drinking alcohol and drive, she said. Provincial governors have been instructed to revise traffic plans as most Songkran celebrants are expected to return to Bangkok on Saturday to resume work on Monday. More police checkpoints will be set up on major roads leading to Bangkok while extra traffic lanes will be open on roads where traffic is heavy, she said. (TNA)
