41 persons killed in southern flood

BANGKOK, Jan 15 (TNA) - A total of 41 persons have been killed in flooding in 12 southern provinces since the natural disaster hit southern Thailand on the New Year’s Day up till now, said Chatchai Promlert, director-general of Interior Ministry’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department. Mr. Chatchai said more than 531,911 houses were affected by the severe flood plus landslide in the South. Also, 20 state-run buildings, over 1,172 roads and 191 bridges were damaged in the natural catastrophe. However, the situation has improved to date as only six southern provinces are still under floodwater after relief officials plus the military personnel have moved in to assist the flood victims. The Department has coordinated with authorities of southern provinces currently to prepare for a new round of heavy rainfall in the region between January 16 – 20 following a warning by the Meteorological Department.
