46 Thai products registered as geographical indications

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - The Department of Intellectual Property has already registered the geographical indications (GI) for 46 outstanding farm products of local areas in Thailand. The department’s director-general Pajchima Tanasanti said the GI-registered products included Hom Mali fragrant rice of the Thung Kula Rong Hai field, Sang Yod rice of Phatthalung province, Hom Mali rice of Surin province, oysters of Surat Thani province, salted eggs of Chaiya district, roast pork of Trang province, sweet tamarinds of Phetchabun province, and pomelos of Nakhon Chaisi district. Mrs Pajchima said that foreigners know more about GI products of Thailand, especially Hom Mali rice of the Thung Kula Rong Hai field. The European Union (EU) registered the GI of the Hom Mali rice last March and consequently the rice can be better marketed in the EU. Thailand is seeking the EU’s GI registration for Sang Yod rice of Phatthalung, Doi Tung coffee and Doi Chaang coffee and requesting GI registration from Vietnam for the silk of northeastern Thailand, according to the department’s chief. “GI products will cover more than the 46 product items. GI registration applications for nearly 100 products are being considered and there should be more GI products. The 46 product items are likely to have more values in local and overseas markets,” Mrs Pajchima said. She admitted that product imitation is easier nowadays but she insisted that only appearances can be copied but tastes cannot. (TNA)
