5th International Mstislav Rostropovich Festival kicks off in Baku

Baku, December 5 (AzerTAc). A solemn opening ceremony of the 5th Mstislav Rostropovich Festival was held in Heydar Aliyev Palace on Sunday. The artistic director of the festival, co-organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation is Olga Rostropovich. Azerbaijani Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfaz Garayev and Olga Rostropovich delivered speeches in the opening ceremony of the festival. Abulfaz Garayev said that the aim of the festival is to organize performances of prominent art masters in Rostropovich`s motherland. “This international festival initiated by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, MP Mehriban Aliyeva is held as a music holiday every December in Baku,” Garayev added. The seven-day festival brings together prominent musicians from various countries of the world. According to Olga Rostropovich, president of the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation, holding international music festivals in Baku was her father`s wish. The Mstislav Rostropovich festival has been held in Baku since 2007. “I will be always grateful to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva for the organization of the first festival in memory of my father in Baku,” she said. The festival will be culminated with the performance of the Paris Chamber Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Foster. The Flanders Opera Symphony Orchestra performed music pieces by world classic composers in the opening ceremony of the festival. The general conductor and artistic director of the Flanders Opera Symphony Orchestra is Dmitri Yurovski and soloist is Georg Nigl from Austria.
