BANGKOK, April 1 (TNA) - The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) says the "60+Earth Hour 2019" campaign that Bangkok joined with about 7,000 major cities in 188 countries worldwide last Saturday night has saved the power cost in the city by over 6 million baht. MEA Deputy Governor Thirawat Thepamnuaysuk told journalists of the finding on March 31, one day after the "60+Earth Hour 2019" campaign was launched in the capital during 8:30pm-9:30pm. Thirawat acknowledged the "60+Earth Hour 2019" campaign, organized at a front outdoor plaza of the CentralWorld shopping complex in Bangkok's Pathumwan area, helped reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 749 tons and the power consumption by 1,514 megawatts, saving the electricity cost for the nation by over 6 million baht. According to the MEA deputy governor, this year's 60+Earth Hour campaign in Bangkok was jointly conducted by MEA, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and hundreds of other public and private agencies, including the Foundation for Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (Thailand) and the World Wildlife Fund (Thailand). To help relieve the problem of global warming or climate change, Bangkok has participated in the annual "60+Earth Hour" campaign since 2008, one year after the worldwide activity was first launched, with a total cut of 10,259 tons of electricity consumption in the capital over the past decade, saving the power cost by about 64.78 million baht totally.
