7th Mekong-Japan Summit ends successfully

TOKYO, July 4 (TNA) - The 7th Mekong-Japan Summit, held in Tokyo from July 2-4, has successully concluded, with Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha joining leaders of the participating nations in endorsing the "2015 Tokyo Strategy". Under the "2015 Tokyo Strategy", the Japanese government will expand cooperation and help enhance peace in the region and the world. The significance of the three-year cooperation under the "2015 Tokyo Strategy", set from 2016-2018, lies on how to develop the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) with "quality growth", after the "2012 Tokyo Strategy", through developing infrastructures, promoting investment and increasing in cooperation between the public and private sectors. The "2015 Tokyo Strategy" calls for four types of cooperation, including that on connectivity of infrastructures and regulations, human resources development, sustain development with other countries and peace and security promotion in the region and the world. Hailing his participation at the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit, which he proclaimed a success, the Thai leader said he has learned, among others, that the Japanese parliament has attached importance to cooperation among countries in GMS, which include Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and China's southern Yunnan Province. After the conclusion of the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit, Japanese, Myanmar and Thai leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of intent (MOI) on the joint development of Myanmar’s Dawei Deep Seaport, representing the three nations' concrete cooperation on the regional flagship project which should become a new economic door of the world, connecting the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. Besides, Myanmar’s Dawei Deep Seaport provides a great benefit to Japanese private investors who can use Thailand as their production, connection and distribution bases of goods and services in the region. During his three-day stay in Tokyo, the Thai prime minister was also granted an audience with Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, as well as held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe, after which the Thai leader told a joint press conference that the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit marked an important cooperation between Japan and the Mekong region in the lead-up to the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by the end of this year. Japan and Thailand have earlier agreed to develop high-speed train running between Bangkok to Chiang Mai in the thai North, while both countries have also planned to jointly develop a rail system with the East-West Economic Corridor in future.
