8 Malaysians, Singaporeans Nabbed Over Heroin, Cannabis Seizure At Woodlands Checkpoint

Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah SINGAPORE, July 29 (Bernama) -- Immigration enforcement officers 'flagged down' a Malaysian-registered taxi for a very different reason last Monday. The officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authorities (ICA) found three bundles of drugs hidden under the driver's seat when the vehicle underwent a routine check about 5pm at the Woodlands Checkpoint. The bundles contained 1.145kg of heroin worth about US$58,626 (S$80,000, US$1 = $S1.36), cannabis, 'ice' and cash amounting to more than S$9,900. Four Malaysians comprising the 52-year-old male taxi driver, and three passengers - 25-year-old man and two women aged 40 and 56 - were detained. In a statement Wednesday, the ICA said the Malaysians were handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) to facilitate investigations. The CNB in turn, detained four Singaporeans, suspected to be the recipients of the drugs. The suspects were aged 29, 43, 48 and 54. --BERNAMA
