Abe Says Economy Is His Biggest Challenge

New York, Sept. 29 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stressed Tuesday that promoting economic growth is the biggest task for him. "The first, second and third most important challenges for me" is the economy, he said in a speech at the headquarters here of news agency Bloomberg, explaining his economic policy mix, dubbed Abenomics. Thanks to the Bank of Japan's "quantitative and qualitative" monetary easing, the country's consumer price index has achieved a turnaround and has risen for the second consecutive year, Abe said. The deflation mindset that had haunted Japan has now been shrugged off, he added. Abe also reiterated his determination to break rock-solid regulations in Japan, saying that he himself will continue working as "a drill bit." "The drill is still spinning fast and my reforms (are) advancing." Abe emphasized that his resolve to conclude Trans-Pacific Partnership multilateral free trade negotiations is "unwavering." The prime minister said he will squarely face up to Japan's key structural challenge of the falling number of children, by taking "bold and unprecedented" measures. Abe said his government will make education for preschoolers free of charge and give substantially more support for parents who have many children, in order to jack up the country's sluggish birthrate.
