Active Thai-Cambodian border trade prior to New Year celebrations

BURI RAM, THAILAND,December 21 (TNA)- Two-way trade along the Thai-Cambodian border is now more active, as Thai and Cambodian people were crowding a border market at Chong Sai Taku border pass in Baan Kruad district of Thailand's northeastern Buri Ram province to buy consumer products, particularly food and beverage items, to prepare for their New Year celebrations, boosting sales by some 10 per cent in two days, compared with those in past weeks. Baan Kruad authorities said on Friday that Thai and Cambodian people have apparently started building up their food and beverage stocks since last week to prepare for the upcoming New Year festivity, assessing that the active border trade should continue until next week. Officials of the Excise Department have, in the meantime, fined daily about 10 vendors and villagers who overbuy liquor and cigarettes from Cambodia. Meanwhile, local soldiers, police and border patrol police, as well as paramilitary rangers have operated checkpoints to help block drug traffickers and goods smugglers, but they have not found such the illicit activities so far.
