Activists voice concerns over gambling in Thailand

BANGKOK, July 2 (TNA) - More than 30 people from several networks, including the Stop Gambling Network, on Monday submitted an open letter to Vichien Chavalit, permanent secretary for Social Development and Human Security, expressing concerns over the spreading of gambling to Asia and asked the government not to revive an online three-digit lottery. Thanakorn Komkris, a coordinator of the Stop Gambling Network, said crimes are expected to be rampant as those who had lost in betting of the just ended Euro 2012 had to find money and pay for the lost bet while bookmakers would demand money from losers. He urged the Ministry to spearhead in ridding every form of gambling as well as issuing measures and set up a special fund, aimed at reducing gambling problem in the country. Most importantly, the government must not revive the online two or three-digit lottery or open an entertainment complex, Thanakorn said, adding that his network would oppose the government if it plans to launch the projects. Gambling in Asian countries, including Thailand, has grown much more than other continents. Money spends in gambling in Asia is expected to reach about 79. 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, growing at the average of 18.3 per cent annually from 2010, he said. Meanwhile, Vichien told networks members that his ministry would issue measures in solving gambling, especially those which affect youths. (TNA)
