ADB to provide loan for modernization of Takhiatash TPP in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, July 15 By Demir Azizov- Trend: The Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved allocation of a loan in the amount of $300 million for the implementation of the project for the modernization of Takhiatash thermal power plant (TPP), the bank reported. The project worth $700 million includes the construction of two combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) with a capacity of 280 megawatts each with the decommissioning of the old blocks of the TPP, the report noted. The completion of the project is scheduled for 2020. Along with the ADB`s loan, the project will be financed by the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan in the amount of $270 million and budget funding in the amount of $130 million and equity of the "Uzbekenergo " State Joint Stock Company. The installed capacity of the Takhiatash TPP is 730 megawatts. The first unit of power plant was commissioned in 1956, the last (fifth) - in 1967. The power plant provides electricity to the north-west of the country, the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm region. The reconstruction Takhiatash TPP is associated with the increased need from electricity and gas companies expanding their operations in the development of the field on the Ustyurt plateau. At present, there are 45 power plants in Uzbekistan with total capacity of about 13 million kilowatts, including 16 power plants included in the "Uzbekenergo" SJC, with a total capacity of 12.04 million kilowatts. Up to 90 percent of all electricity produced in the country is produced by 10 thermal power stations of the company with a total installed capacity of 11.6 million kilowatts. Some 29 hydropower plants with installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts mostly arranged in cascade hydropower stations and work on watercourse. The remainder of the electricity is generated by autonomous thermal power station of the industrial enterprises and small hydroelectric power stations belonging to the structure of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan. Electricity production increased by 3.2 percent up to 54.207 billion kilowatt / hours in Uzbekistan in 2013, compared to 2012. Uzbekistan joined the ADB in 1995. Today the republic is the largest recipient of loans from the financial institution in Central Asia.
