Airport cargo expansion showcased at Air Cargo China 2018

Manama, Jun. 9 (BNA): A delegation from Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) highlighted the ongoing improvements being made to Bahrain International Airport’s (BIA) cargo facilities at Air Cargo China 2018, Asia’s biggest airfreight industry exhibition and conference. The expansion, which is part of the Airport Modernisation Programme (AMP), will further increase BIA’s cargo capacity and enable it to serve very high volumes relative to its size. The event provided a platform for participants to network, explore opportunities for collaboration, and discuss current developments shaping Asia’s airfreight market. BAC Chief Commercial Officer, Ayman Zainal, headed the delegation, which included members of the Cargo & Logistics Business Development team. Zainal, said: “In line with ongoing efforts to transform logistics and air cargo into one of the Kingdom’s primary industries, BIA is taking significant steps to overhaul its infrastructure and expand its capacity in this important area. Last year, BIA witnessed a 10% surge in air cargo traffic and we expect this figure to grow considerably once the new Passenger Terminal Building opens. BAC recently met with a number of leading air cargo companies operating at BIA to discuss increasing the volume of goods they transport through the airport. Furthermore, we aim to build new strategic partnerships with multinational logistics providers, which will help to strengthen Bahrain's strategic position as hub for logistic services in the GCC and wider Middle East.” The current cargo terminal at BIA operates around the clock and can accommodate around 19,000 square metres of goods, including export and trans-shipment goods, and cargo transported between the airport and customs clearance.
